(1950s) Here is a stunning artifact salvaged from the lobby of the famed, Waikikian Hotel. Perhaps no commercial venture of the Poly-Pop era was more influential and forward thinking as the Waikikian. Designed by star architect Pete Wimberley with installation art by Ed Brownlee, the hotel and it's Tahitian Lanai bar and restaurant were trendsetting to say the least. Bob and Jack Thornton openly credit the Waikikian as a direct influence for their concept of the MAI-KAI in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. To say the project mixed modernist design with Poly-primitive subjects is an understatement. This modernist abstract painting reflects the essence of the exaggerated pre-pop art movement of the late 50s-mid 60s era. Notable for its use of circular, angular and geometric features to create movement and repeating patterns, this painting presents a Polynesian couple entranced in the music of a moonlit night. The hotel lobby was filled with art of this type and this frame matches others featured throughout the hotel's originals. Oil on canvas with crazing, housed in a burl-wood frame. 29.5"x35.5". VG+
