K, G & K SIDE KNIFE W/ COMMEMORATIVE INSCRIPTION
OF MISSOURI SOLDIER. This is one of perhaps 20 identical Bowies in existence today mfg. by K, G & K of Columbia, South Carolina. It is not a cut down sword, but was originally mfg. in this configuration w/ the clip point formed in the original forging process. The brass guard has only 2 branches. The straight blade, brass ferrule at the base of grip & thin leather & sm. gage iron wire on the grip are all keeping w/ swords made by K, G & K. The Bowie is 25" long w/ a blade width at the guard of 1 3/6". The scabbard was not made specifically for this knife, but does fit well. The brass guard is inscribed w/ stamped lettering "W A Read and 1 MO Cal, CSA". Read enlisted in the partisan ranger unit on July 25th, 1862 after at Wilsons Creek where he was wounded in 1861. The unit was formed by Major General Hindman, CSA, under the command of Col. J. C. Porter, a veteran of Wilsons Creek to tie up Union troops & recruit soldiers for Arkansas. The unit fought in sm. skirmishes or battles in northern MO at Florida, Moore's Mill, Kirksville, & Palmyra. On his amnesty report, Read is described as 33 years old, 5'8" tall w/ blue eyes & dark hair. Exploits of the 1st NE MO Cavalry are found in the OR's, the book, "With Porter in North Missouri", by Joseph A. Mudd & The Winter 200 edition of Blue & Gray magazine. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a well researched 10 page unpublished article on this knife. CONDITION: very good overall. Hilt has untouched chocolate/mustard colored patina. Markings in guard are not typical of war time use, but could be a commemorative addition. Regardless; this is a fine example of the only K G & K made knife featured in "Confederate Bowie Knives", pg 108 by Melton, Phillips & Sexton. Blade is extremely sharp & gray overall w/ scattered staining & light pitting. Grip is missing 90% of its leather & retains only 2 strands of well patina iron wire. Grip has 2 lg. aged cracks. Accompanying scabbard is solid & fits sword well. PROVENANCE: Herbert "Bert" Murch Collection. (02-13419/JS). $800-1,200.
