Original stop motion Triceratops reference puppet with metal rods to move it made by Phil Tippet Studio before they changed to CGI in the production of the Steven Spielberg directed science fiction adventure film 'Jurassic Park' (1993) where during a preview tour, a theme park suffers a major power breakdown that allows its cloned dinosaur exhibits to run amok.

Everyone remembers the incredible dinosaurs in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park but few realize that this iconic film marked the paradigm shift from traditional stop motion animation to computer graphics-based visual effects. Tippett Studio’s research and development team undertook the mission to bridge the gap between its deep knowledge of traditional animation techniques and the new digital medium. These efforts, led by Craig Hayes, resulted in the Oscar-winning Digital Input Device (DID), which allowed stop-motion animators to create digital dinosaur performances through the manipulation of physical armatures.
Phil Tippett received his second Academy Award for the team’s groundbreaking work on Jurassic Park – work that is still being lauded today for its extraordinarily lifelike animation, despite the passage of more than two decades.
This lot is part of the Phil Tippett Collection and will come with a co-signed COA by Phil Tippett.
Phil Tippett is the founder and namesake of Tippett Studio. His varied career in visual effects has spanned more than 30 years and includes two Academy Awards; and six nominations, one BAFTA award and four nominations, two Emmys and the advent of modern digital effects in motion pictures.
He is the inventor of the Stop-Motion technique called Go-Motion and even has a dinosaur species named after him: Elaphrosaurus philtippettorum.
