PISTOL. Cal. 8mm Nambu. S# 1924. Bbl. 119mm. Approx. 2,400 mfg. 1903-1906. First batch of 1,500 for Japan & portion of next group for Thailand w/ Thai markings. Later, the pistol was modified & referred to as “Papa” variation which was commonly slotted for shoulder stock. This pistol has curved trigger of Grandpa variation rather than squared trigger of Papa. Proper Grandpa tangent sight numbered 1-5. Chamber has intertwined cannonball symbol of Tokyo Koshikawa Arsenal. Right rear of receiver w/ 3 Japanese characters translating to “Nambu type”. Additionally has between safety slot & bottom of front strap a circular Thai charkra symbol. Top rear of frame w/ recessed panels of second batch. Matching numbered cocking piece & bolt that is numbered twice (each side of cross slot). Derby & Brown’s “Japanese Military Cartridge Handguns 1893-1945” reference book indicates Grandpas have 4.5mm extractor & Papas are 5mm, as is the extractor on this pistol. Coarsely checkered walnut grips w/out markings on back. Lanyard loop swivels; not fixed in straight rearward position. Small faint proof marks at bottom of grip safety slot & bottom of front strap. MAGS: 1 early nickel plated wood bottomed 8 rd. numbered 2274; very good condition. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: large reconditioned stock/holster w/ matching numbers that are restamped over unreadable prior number. Underside of hinged buttplate has black inked “2”. Stock has provision for spare mag. but not for cleaning kit. Attachment latch works fine, but telescoping latch sticks. CONDITION: very good to excellent appearance having some high point wear consistent w/ being in stock/holster. High point finish loss on grip screws. Nice appearing right grip w/ slight diamond top hand wear. Left grip exhibits more wear to diamond tops & has a distinct horizontal line just above mag. release. Slight thinning of finish along top of mainspring housing. Extractor & trigger w/ minimal remaining straw colors. Peppery oxidation on grip straps. Good plus bore w/ light wear & even light frosting.
