Islamic Illuminated Arabic Manuscript, Jazuli's Guide to Good Deeds, 1665. Size 3 7/8 x 3 1/2 inches. 11 x 9.4 cm. Al-Jazuli, AbÅ« `Abd AllÄh Muhammad Ibn SulaymÄn (died in 870 of the Islaminc year, corresponding to 1460 AD). DALÄ€'IL AL-KHAYYIRÄ€T (Guide to Good Deeds). This is one of the most famous books of prayer in Islamic literature. Folios: 1a – 105a. 8 lines to a page. This manuscript is dated 19th of Ramadan 1075 of the Islamic calendar, corresponding to 5th April 1665 AD. First leaf is missing. Followed by: AL-KAWÄ€KIB AD-DURIYYAH FI MADH KHAYR AL-BARIYYAH (The Shining Stars in Praise of the Best of People [i.e. Prophet Muhammad]), which is also known as QASIDAT AL-BURDA (Poem of the Mantle) by Muhammad Ibn Sa`id al-Busiri (died 696 of the Islamic calendar corresponding to 1296 AD). Folios 107a – 125a. 8 lines to a page. Followed by: A few prayers, folios: 125b – 131b. Various lines to a page. Altogether there are 131 folios (262 pages). It is written in elegant and clear maghribi (North African) script, in brown ink, in more than one hand, with headings, keywords, and markings in red. All headings and tail pieces are beautifully illuminated in different colors and designs. In the first manuscript, there are two sketches one representing the Ka`bah in Mecca, the other the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad in the Medina Mosque.Bound in contemporary full brown morocco, with a flap in the traditional Islamic style of bookbinding. Both covers and flap are embossed with an arabesque design, crudely rebacked, some edge tears, some wormholes and repairs, but generally a very good manuscript.
