Indian Wars Era Smith & Wesson New Model Russian Top-Break Single Action Revolver, #14978, .44 S& W Russian CF cal., 6.5" round barrel marked in Russian Cyrillic on top rib, along with ser. no., Imperial Russian double-headed eagle, "L" and encircled "II", and a tiny "P" at right, has integral large blade front sight, top adjusting screw and release latch with knurled buttons; fluted 6-shot cylinder unitized with barrel has auto-extraction; open-top frame is marked "I" below latch, has large S& W front hinge, tall barrel latch at rear, trigger guard with characteristic spur, integral "saw-handle" gripstraps (marked "1874" at hump) with lanyard ring at butt and 2-pc. oil-finished walnut grips. The Cyrillic writing on the barrel is consistent with Ludwig Loewe manufactured revolvers. Mfg'd 1874-78. Condition is very good retaining traces of blue in protected areas, much in cylinder flutes, else cleaned gunmetal gray with scattered light oxidation (heavier at muzzle). Edges and markings are sharp, barrel hinge and latch are tight. Action is crisp, bore is clean having overall light etching and sharp rifling. Quite rare, as most went to Russia. Est.: $2,000-$3,000.
