Maratha Confederacy - copper takka, in the name of Shah Alam II, Shri Haridwar mint, AH1216/RY43, 16.10g, broad flan, 30.25mm.

Good Very fine, Extremely rare.

This coin, although similar to M&W T3a has some interesting features - the presence of an English letter 'S' to the left of the RY is the most interesting. It might denote the Christian monogram 'IHS' and as such might suggest an involvement of a European officer under the Sindhias. The obverse also has a couple of interesting symbols not noted by M&W. There appears to be a fish on obverse at 8 o'clock. The main obverse symbol, in the 'S' of the word Fulus, is a sun-shield or aftabgir.
