Maratha Kingdom, 'Swarajya' phase - copper Shivarai in the name of Rajaram (1689-1700 AD), struck in Maharashtra / Deccan as per fabric and weight, M&W T1, 9.16g. Obv: Nagari legend in two lines ...Raja Rama. Rev: Nagari legend Chhatra / Pati in two lines.

Very fine, Very rare.

Copper coins of Rajaram of the 'Deccan fabric' are exceedingly rare, because soon after his accession his capital Raigad was besieged by the Mughals and he had to escape to Gingee in Tamilnadu, where he set up his government in exile. He returned to Maharashtra almost twelve years later but died soon afterwards. Thus, both his tenures in Maharashtra were of a short duration. This is plausibly the reason behind the rarity of his issues.
