Maratha Confederacy - silver rupee in the name of Shah Alam II, Dar al-Saroor Saharanpur mint, AH 1207/RY 34, not listed in M&W, attractive wide flan and fully visible strikes on both sides, possibly struck for special purposes, 11.20g.

Extremely fine, Extremely rare.

The mint at Saharanpur became active under Ghulam Qadir, the Rohilla upstart, when he took over the control of Delhi in 1789. When he was driven out by the Marathas under the Sindhias, the city fell under their control and remained so until the second Anglo-Maratha War. In 1792, the Sindhia governor for Saharanpur was Bhairav Pant Tatya. This coin is struck under his tenure.
