Maratha Confederacy, domains of the Sindhias on behalf of the Peshwas - silver rupee in the name of Shah Alam II, Mustaqir al-Khilafa Akbarabad (Agra) mint, AH 1200/RY 28, with 'dagger' mintmark on reverse, M&W T1a (date not listed), 10.54g.

Very fine, Extremely rare.

This rupee has been attributed to Ghulam Qadir Rohilla's occupation of Agra in KM. However, the AH-date/RY combination on this coin indicates that it was struck between 9 February 1786 and 24 October 1786, a period in which Agra was under Maratha rule and the Rohilla occupation was still a few months away. This proves that the coins with 'dagger' mint-mark were first issued under Maratha authority.
