Maratha Confederacy, domains of the Peshwas - silver rupee of Phulgaon mint, 'Ankushi' type in the name of Shah Ali Gauhar, with additional mintmark of a Hibiscus flower on reverse, M&W T1, 10.98g.

Good very fine, Very rare.

The small village of Phulgaon on the River Bheema to the East of Pune was made into a pleasure destination by Peshwa Baji Rao II during 1812-1815. He constructed several mansions and embankments and encouraged Brahmin families from Pune to settle at 'Phulshahar' as he called it. A mint was operated here to serve this population. Coins bear the mark of a Hibiscus flower which serves as a testimony to the Peshwa's leanings towards Ganesha and also as a pun on the name of the place (flower= 'Phul' in Marathi) where the coins were struck.
