Maratha Confederacy, domains of the Patwardhan family?, - silver rupee in the name of Shah Alam II, pseudo-mint name 'Arkat', with Trisul and flower marks on the reverse, AH -/RY14, not listed in M&W, 11.33g.

Extremely fine, Rare.

Rupees of this type were attributed to Danish India (Tranquebar) on the basis of the AH/RY combination. However, their find-spots are invariably located in the South Maharashtra/North Karnataka region, where the 'Arcot' rupees had been popular as standard currency and even inspired issues of Maratha mints such as Dharwad. Maratha archival sources also mention a coin named 'Arkati Trisuli'. Most likely, these coins were struck at one of the local mints in the region, controlled by the Patwardhan Sardars.
