Maratha Confederacy, domains of the Kher family - silver 1/8 rupee of Jalaun mint, in the name of Shah Alam II, pseudo-RY 17, symbol of trident (trishul) on obverse and Bel leaf on reverse, not listed in M&W, 1.34g.

Extremely fine, Extremely rare.

Fractional coins of Jalaun are exceedingly rare. Jalaun became a British protectorate in 1806 after the fall of the Marathas in Northern India. The rulers of Jalaun were descendants of Govind Balaji Kher, a.k.a. Govind Pant Bundeley, a prominent Maratha statesman under Peshwas Baji Rao I and Balaji Rao. The state lapsed to the British in 1840 following the death of Govind Rao II (1831-1840) who died without an heir.
