Maratha Confederacy - The Nawabs of Saonoor as tributary to the Peshwa, silver rupee of 'Azamnagar' type, in the name of Muhammad Shah with ba-lutf Alah Badshah Zaman couplet, fictitious AH date '66' on obverse and fixed RY 6 on reverse, 11.40g.

Extremely fine, Rare.

The remnants of the mint-name have been suggested to read 'Shahpeth', or 'Azamnagar Shahpur Peth'; however, no such place has been identified. It is likely that it reads 'Shahnoor' or a variation thereof. 'Shahnoor' was the Islamicized name of Saonoor, a small principality in North Karnataka which was tributary to the Peshwas and ruled by Pathan Nawabs.
