(1956) Here is the Treasure of Sierra Madre! When we ran across on old color slide of this image from 1956, we were excited to include it in OCEANIC ARTS: The Godfathers of TIKI book, simply because it summed up LeRoy Schmaltz as an artist and his modernist-primitive take on Tiki. This artistic leaning defined what Oceanic Arts would output over the decades and also what separated their products from the more pedestrian design of competitive Polynesian decor suppliers. This mosaic is the Rosetta Stone of Oceanic Arts, and it is with great pleasure that we are able to offer this incredible piece after its discovery by LeRoy himself in his art storage after the first OA auction. This modernist mosaic is the perfect platform for LeRoy's (at the time in 1956) newly discovered art of primitive culture sensibility. The inclusion of the primitive palm frond mask applied to a Millard Sheets style mosaic background is indicative of their early product line and is classic proto-OA! SIgned on the back. 18"x29"x6". VG+ with typical wear.
