Cal. 31 S# 182248. From Dan Poppen's wife's direct descent still with tags when loaned to VMI by her family. Along with the 4" Colt Pocket model mfg. late 1860-early 1861 is a soldier's spoon/fork combination & scissor ball mold, all w/ old tags stating they were used by "J.E. Barnett" in the Civil War. collection we have a 4" Colt Pocket model mfg. late 1860-early 1861 w/ a soldier's spoon/fork combination & scissor ball mold, all w/ old tags stating they were used by "J.E. Barnett" in Civil War. John Edward Barnett (1843-1922) entered VMI in January 1862 but joined with Warrenton Light Artillery Battery soon after & later served as Quartermaster Sergeant w/ Poague's Artillery & Rockbridge Virginia 1st Light Artillery. He was with Lee's army at Appomattox & was paroled April 9, 1865. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: mold & knife/fork combo. CONDITION: good overall, appears original & matching, though not disassembled. Loading lever swivel screw is broken & peened. Markings are all well discerned including stagecoach holdup cyl. scene, which is mostly discernable. Metal overall is a mixed gray patina w/ areas of rust & pitting. Grips retain approx. half of their original varnish. Backstrap & trigger guard retain strong traces of their original silver. Mechanically fine w/ clear rifled bore. Scissor mold & patented fork/spoon combination are fair to good. The knife/fork maker read "UNION KNIFE CO". PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Dan Poppen.
