Hiranyakas of Rayalaseema/South-Central Karnataka, lead coin of Mahasenapati Vasithiputa Khadakama (c.250-300 AD), 16.85g. Obv: horse standing facing left on a pedestal, auspicious symbols (Shrivatsa, Bhadrapeetha, conch shell) around its head; Brahmi legend ...thiputasa Herañakānām Khada(kama)… from 5 to 10 o'clock. Rev: a tree in railing and a ten-arched hill surmounted by a crescent, with wavy line below.

Extremely fine, Extremely rare.

The Hiranyakas rose to prominence as a dynasty after the fall of the Satavahanas in mid-3rd century AD. They were matrimonially related to the Ikshvakus. Although many Hiranyaka coins are known, those with clearly legible inscriptions are exceedingly rare. Recently known evidence suggests that they began issuing coins as 'Mahasenapatis' and then assumed the royal title of 'King'.
