He Dog was close friends with Crazy Horse and rode with him in the Great Sioux War. The battles he participated in included Rosebud, Little Bighorn, Slim Buttes and Wolf Mountain. He surrendered with Crazy Horse and later in life became an Indian judge. He bought this rife during that time for protection.
