George Custer was issued a Spencer saddle ring carbine when he took command of the 7th Cavalry in 1866. The gun was an 1865 Spencer 50 Cal carbine and Custer cut his name into the stock, which was required of all troops. It is believed this Spencer carbine was specially made for Custer by the Spencer Company.
