Cal. 44. NSN. Bbl. 28" rnd. Dovetailed front blade style sight. Dovetailed notch rear sight. Color case hardened action. Blued bbl. Uncheckered walnut stock w/ shadow line cheekpiece & metal crescent buttplate. Designed for paper cartridges, dropping the lever causes the bbl. to slide forward then pivot downward allowing insertion of cartridge. As the lever was closed, the bbl. slid rearward, lever closed, cap placed & rifle is ready to fire. More than 17,000 was produced, but majority were carbines designed for military use & bored for 50 cal balls. Number of sporting rifles is minimal. CONDITION: the action retains 25% muted case colors w/ majority of the action turning to gray or silver. Bbl. finish turning to brown overall w/ some light spots, but few noticeable areas of oxidation & no pitting. The stock has been sanded & refinished w/ scattered scratches & compression marks. The bore remains remarkably bright w/ prominent rifling. (01-16065/TB). ANTIQUE. $700-900.
