WW2 AMERICAN NAVY COMMANDER ALLEN MAYHEW SHINN. This 49 1/2" Lantaka w/ approx. 1 1/4" bore is solid bronze & weighs 85.7lbs. Shinn (1908-1998) was stationed in the South Pacific where he collected this souvenir according to his son, he later displayed & had a custom stand made that accompanies. Shinn retired as Vice-Admiral serving in Navy from 1932-1970. Typical of Lantakas is 5" tiller & a lg. 5" decorated flange at the muzzle. Cannon still retains bronze yoke which was integrally cast. Multi stage oct. to rnd. With raised ring transitions having typical long tapered Mindanaoan triangular floral decoration. Lantaka have been made in Mindanao for almost 300 years, many have been brought back by GI's as souvenirs from the Spanish American War through World War II like Vice-Admiral Shinn. Though these cannon were sometimes used as weapons; for the most part they were used as a sign of wealth. In the 19th century, it was not uncommon for a wealthy family to display many of these bronze relics around their home. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: provenance paperwork. CONDITION: overall very good w/ bronze patina, scattered casting flaws, finishing marks, accompanying stand is solid.
