Cal. 50. S# 641. This standard second model, also known as the model 1863 Maynard Carbine, had production of just over 20,000 arms between 1863 – 1865 & this is among the first production w/ 3 digit S#. Standard configuration w/ 20" oct. to rnd. bbl., pinched front sight & 3 leaf adj. rear sight. Left side of frame has sling bar & carbine ring. Stock is straight grain walnut w/ 2 crisp inspector cartouches which read “JM” (Julian McAllister) & “AJN”. Sm. sub inspector letters found on most other parts, bbl. has “G.W.S.” inspection on left breech. This is a fine example of this popular Civil War gun that retains most of its original finish. CONDITION: fine overall. Bbl. retains 90% original blue finish though dull w/ areas of rust & pitting near muzzle. The bore is crisp & shiny w/ well defined rifling. Traces of muted case color w/ balance silver/gray found on lever & hammer. Stock is sound & solid w/ raised grain w/ numerous storage dents, dings, scuffs & scratches w/ crisp, like new inspectors’ cartouches. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Dan Poppen. (01-17318/JS).
