ANGSTADT ATTRIBUTED PENNSYLVANIA SMOOTH BORE FLINTLOCK RIFLE WITH ASSOCIATED POWDER HORN CIRCA 1810. Cal. 50. NSN. Beautiful “as-found” large bore “smooth rifle” Made in configuration and weight of rifle with rifle sights. 43" oct. to rnd. bbl w/ faceted transition and wedding rings. Brass blade front sight, dovetailed fixed notch rear sight, unmarked lock with bridled frizzen and rebated tail, flat serpentine cock, pin fastened full length maple stock, brass furniture, distinctive 4-pc patchbox patch box w/ whale's tail finial having borderline engraving. Other brass fittings include crescent buttplate, sideplate, trigger guard, thimble & nose cap. Simple hardwood ramrod is held by 2 round pipes. Joseph Angstadt worked in Kutztown, Berks County, Pennsylvania, 1800-1817. Mr. Browning displayed this rifle with simplistic nicely patinaed horn with simple checkering and notched area near tip which has contemporary brass spring loaded measure which appears contemporary to manufacture and not a later addition, plug has checkered knob with sling hole. This is a beautiful pair of very simplistic but elegant longarm and horn, now over 200 years old and no alterations from when made. This gun was used but well cared for. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: powder horn measuring 13 1/2" around the outside edge w/ brass spout & hardwood plug having a checkered knob. Front end leading to spout has relief carving followed by wedges of checkering. CONDITION: very good to fine overall and excellent for an original 200 year old American long rifle. This is the condition you want to find all Kentucky rifles. Iron has grungy brown/plum patina w/ light scattered surface corrosion & pitting especially at breech. Stock retains old finish on buttstock and protected areas of forestock, forestock has hand worn patina where handled, several long hairlines, one has inserted glue near nosecap on right side, few minor chips along bbl channel, unaffecting aesthetic. Brass has dark olive/mustard patina except patchbox which has been cleaned and has mottled mustard patina. Mechanics are functionable but mainspring is weak, dark pitted bore. Horn is overall very good with brass tip a little loose. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of George W. Browning. (01-16152). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
