DEMO LOT
Jahangir (AH 1014-1037/1605-1627 AD), Patna Mint, Silver ½ Rupee (Sultani), AH 1015/ Sana 1 RY, Obv: Arabic legend The Kalima Shahada at the top in two lines, "zarb Patna" with Hijri year 1015 completely visible, within a dotted border, Rev: Persian legend “Noor ud din Muhammad Jahangir Badshah Ghazi” & “sana 1 RY” at the bottom within a dotted border, 6.9g, 18.19mm, (Unpublished), dotted borders visible, superb choice quality, original toning with light patina, overall very gorgeous, XF-AU, Exceedingly Rare.
Note: A fascinating aspect of Jahangir's reign was his experimentation with coins. In addition to their high quality, weight standards, and intricate designs, coins from his period are known in a variety of denominations with interesting names. For heavyweight silver half rupees of high purity, the Sultani denomination was used.
The Tuzuk-e-Jahangiri records the following names for fractional denominations; Gold coins of half tola as 'Nurani', meaning 'the light' and quarter tola as 'Riwazi'. The silver coins (sikkas) of 10 tolas were named 'Kaukab-i-bakht', meaning 'star of good luck', 5 tolas as 'Kaukab-i-sa'd' meaning 'star of auspiciousness', 1 tola as 'Jahangiri', and 'Half Jahangiri as Sultani' meaning 'The Royal'.
This is the first time that a Sultani coin of Jahangir has been recorded from the Patna mint, which bears the year AH 1015 and RY 1, which indicates that it was struck during his first regnal year. It is only known that the Sultani coins were produced by the Kabul, Agra and Ahmadabad mints for three years between AH 1014 and AH 1016. Previously unpublished, it is being offered in an auction for the first time.
The first known Sultani coin of Patna mint.
This coin is an outstanding example of Jahangir's coinage.
