WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40). S# 28029. This is a rare special order rifle w/ 24 1/4" oct. to rnd., half magazine w/ button end, nickel blade front sight & long tang semi buckhorn rear sight w/ checkered edges & case colored frame. Mounted w/ fancy burled American walnut w/ wrap-a-round checkered forearm & checkered wrist on buttstock, case colored crescent buttplate w/ trap containing original 4 piece iron & brass cleaning rod. Frame is 1st type w/ mortised thumbprint dust cover & single trigger. Rifle was not disassembled as it is so untouched & screws do not appear to have not been turned in a very long time. The fit of the wood to metal is excellent & no doubt this is original configuration. Winchester factory letter does identify this rifle w/ half oct. bbl., plain trigger, checkered stock, case hardened receiver, & short magazine received in warehouse Mar 1, 1878 & shipped May 6, 1878, order no. 11740. There is an additional order number crossed out from March 1, order no. 11276 which may account for discrepancy in sights listed as this rifle appears original & unaltered in any way. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Winchester Factory Letter. CONDITION: very good to excellent. Bbl. retains about 97% original blue, slightly thinning especially at muzzle. Receiver retains virtually all its original case colors, as does left sideplate. Right sideplate has a loss of about 20% of its color which is silver/gray. Dust cover also retains most of its’ case color. Lever & trigger plate also retain virtually all their case color. Hammer retains excellent color also w/ grungy staining on right side. Forend cap also retains 95% bright original blue w/ 1/4” scuff w/ pin prick pitting. Stocks are overall w/ very sharp checkering, left side of buttstock has dent in checkering & about 3” long white stain. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. PROVENANCE: Descended through the family of our consignor from his great grandfather. (01-17472/JS). ANTIQUE. $7,000-9,000.
