F.C. CONVERSE BY WILLIAM E COREY. Cal. 303 Brit. S# 648684. Bbl. 26". Rare presentation model Pattern 14 Mark I* rifle from the Eddystone Rifle Plant has brass presentation plate engraved "TO Mr. F. C. CONVERSE Compliments of Wm E. Corey". William E Corey was President of Carnegie Steel (1901-1903), US Steel (1903-1911), Director of Baldwin Locomotives & President of Midvale Steel & Ordnance Company, which owned the Eddystone Rifle Plant. According to "UNITED STATES RIFLE MODEL OF 1917" by C.S. Ferris "The Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, PA constructed two large plants on its property at Eddystone, PA in 1915. One of these was leased to the Remington Arms Co. of Delaware. The plant itself was afterwards acquired by the Midvale Steel & Ordnance Co. Midvale owned several plants related to steel & ordnance production & the Eddystone Rifle Plant was one of them. Initially, Remington at Eddystone made Pattern 14 rifles for Great Britain". Eddystone later converted to the manufacture of Model of 1917 US rifles. Receiver ring marked on top w/ "2" & 8 pointed star. Star also occurs on top of bolt handle & rear of extractor. Left side of receiver marked w/ British proof mark & broad arrow. Volley sights are present. Bbl. is unmarked & undated. All parts markings are "E". Additionally trigger guard is marked at forward end "02". Very attractive tiger stripe walnut stock set. Buttstock is marked on right side w/ broad arrow over encircled "IE" & "PATT'14". Has inletted brass oval presentation plate & unmarked circular brass marking disk. Stock is marked "3S" behind trigger guard. Aperture rear sight graduated to 1,650 yds. Blade front sight w/ protective ears. Front sight is marked on top "14" & "135". Unmarked period 1907 sling. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 17" fullered blade bayonet marked on left ricasso "1917" & encircled "REMINGTON". Marked on right ricasso w/ flaming bomb, "US" & eagle "15" inspectors mark. Bayonet grips are walnut w/ 2 grooves. Crossguard, grip area & ricasso are blue steel. Balance of blade is parkerized. Bayonet has high degree of original finish w/ very light wear & handling marks. Green leather scabbard w/ steel tip & throat. 1910 Belt hook. Throat mark "GF" in oval. CONDITION: matching walnut stock set has high degree of original finish w/ very light wear & scattered sm. handling marks. Metal retains 95% original blue w/ scattered sm. scratches & sm. area of missing finish at heel. Sling has light wear, scuffing & flexing. Near excellent shiny bore. Appears unfired. (20-384/RW).
