ENFIELD 1884 DATED MARK II REVOLVER.
Cal. 476 Enfield. S# 9927. Bbl. 3 7/8". Mfg. 1880-1887 & used in service until 1911. Originally designed in 1879 by RSAF of Enfield. Black powder cartridge utilizing 265 grain lead bullet deemed inaccurate during contemporary colonial conflicts. Unusual self extracting system designed by Owen Jones w/ intent of allowing removal of spent cartridges while retaining live ones. In actuality, complicated to use & known to cause jams while loading / unloading. Replaced 1889 by more efficient & powerful Webley MK I revolver in 455 cal. Also utilized by Canada's NW Mounted Police from 1883-1911. Frame dated 1884 along w/ numerous proofs & broad arrow marks. Matching numbered bbl. Backstrap at lower portion marked "JMD" w/ 2 lines through it. Upper portion of backstrap marked "2no. W.D." over "249". DA functioning, smooth walnut grip & lanyard ring at butt. CONDITION: fair overall patina appearance w/ proper functioning. Although known for developing looseness which was 1 major reason for discontinuance, action is tight. Cleaned pitting throughout along w/ marks on grip, especially right side & sm. crack top of left side. Fair pitted bore w/ solid rifling. (01-18146/NW). ANTIQUE. $1,200-1,800.
