EARLY BASE FIRE FRENCH TARGET PISTOL WITH CARVED
IVORY GRIP. Cal. 32 Base fire (.329 groove dia.). S# 286. Mechanism appears to be a later development arising from Pauly’s patent. The boxlock firing mechanism w/ hammer type cocking lever has flat wide striker which protrudes about 3/8” from breech face when fired. No patent markings are found. 9” Oct. bbl. has central 5” attractively chamfered & fluted. Rear of top flat is engraved w/ makers name & address (L. Chereonier ? XXXX a’ Nants). Rear sight acts as tab for extractor which pivots at bottom of breech end of bbl. Pin type front sight is dovetailed through. Tip down bbl. is held in battery by a secondary trigger in front of trigger guard & snaps into place when closed. Bbl. & action are engraved w/ lg. open scrolling ribbons interspersed w/ acanthus highlights. Steel trigger guard has finger spur. Stock is very nicely fluted w/ matching steel grip cap & appears to be fashioned from either walrus or hippo ivory. CONDITION: fair to good. Metal cleaned to silver gray w/ considerable overall spotting & light pitting. There are some chips in fluting on left side of stock along w/ an old repair at bottom left side. Bore is fair to good, rifling visible. Mechanism is in working order. Bbl. is a bit loose. A very interesting old pistol worthy of further investigation. (01-17251/MGM51). ANTIQUE. $2,500-3,500.
