Cal. 44. S# 1711. Bbl. 7 1/2". This gun is one of about 500 “backfill” revolvers made after the Whitneyville Walker & transitional dragoons, these guns fall in a serial range about 1350-1999. These dragoons still have the early feature of having matched assembly numbered loading lever & bbl., instead of serial number lever. The bbl. is serial number 1711, but also has assembly number in loading lever well “198”, which is also found on loading arm, otherwise revolver is in standard configuration w/ slim 1 piece grips, 1 line New York address & mark on left side of frame “COLT’S / PATENT / US” which is in the position & size seen on earlier Whitneyville Hartford dragoons & second Govt. contract dragoons. This gun indeed is a rare survivor of the first year production of early Colt 1st Model dragoons in 1849. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a copy of Dick Salzer’s article “Debunking the Myth, Colt Legends Die Hard” which shows these “back fill” early dragoons. CONDITION: good overall. Appears original & all matching w/ exception of unserialized wedge & replaced hammer screw, metal overall is a mottled brown patina, mechanically functional w/ good discernable bore. (01-17429/JS). ANTIQUE. $5,000-7,000.
