Confederate Civil War Richmond Armory Single Shot Percussion Rifle-Musket, Type II, NVSN, .58 cal., 40" round barrel marked "V/P/(eagle head)" at breech (undated, but not all were), has block-blade front sight (serves as a bayonet lug) 1.25" behind muzzle, and 3-leaf rear sight; beveled "high-hump" lockplate is marked "CS" over "Richmond, VA" below nipple bolster with cleanout screw, and "1862" behind hammer; steel fittings include 2-pc. trigger guard with sling loop at front, two round lock screw escutcheons, three barrel bands, tulip-tip ramrod; brass fittings are Richmond-type curved buttplate and nosecap. Fullstock of oil-finished walnut is marked "ND" behind trigger guard tang, has brass tag marked "22" at top of comb, step at lower band. Mfg'd 1862. Condition is good, the barrel with general cleaned erosion (heavier at bolster but breech markings are visible), lockplate with dark peppering and fine markings, trigger guard uniformly pitted, bands smooth gunmetal gray (middle with yellowish finish), brass with age patina. Stock is sound showing scattered marks, minor splintering at ramrod channel, with perhaps some wood re-working at the bands. Bottom band has an odd cutout to fit the spring, rear sight is a replacement. Lock is correct and fits perfectly in the stock cavity, the brass buttplate and nosecap are correct Richmond parts, and the overall 56" length is also correct. Action is smooth; bore has been shot out and has no rifling, shows uniform moderate erosion. Est.: $3,000-$4,000. (Antique)
