Civil War U.S. Springfield Model 1863 Muzzleloading Rifle-Musket, Type II, with Bayonet and Sling, NVSN, .58 cal., 40" round barrel marked "V/P/(eagle head)" at left breech, "1864" top flat, has block-blade front sight (doubles as bayonet lug) and 2-leaf rear sight, retained by 3 spring-held bands (middle with sling loop); beveled lockplate marked "(spread-wing eagle/olive branches)" to left of "U.S./Springfield", "1864" at rear, rounded nipple bolster with eagle motif; steel fittings include triggerguard with sling loop at front, curved buttplate marked "U.S." at top screw, 2 lock screws with brass escutcheons, nosecap; oil-stained walnut fullstock has "GH" (George Hosmer) and "ESA" (Erskine S. Allen) inspectors' cartouches at left, raised panels either side of lock, steel tulip-head ramrod. Mfg'd 1864. Condition is fine retaining a smooth, mildly toned bright finish and thin rust oxidation on barrel that should be cleaned, with sharp edges and markings. Stock is sound with minor marks, heavier at butt, excellent cartouches, sharp edges and pleasing reddish color. Action is strong, bore shows corrosion, very good rifling. Unmarked angular bayonet is bright with scattered oxidation, no scabbard, brown leather sling remains supple with much original surface finish. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. (Antique)
