Civil War Spencer Saddle-Ring Carbine, #18789, .52 RF cal., 22" round 6-groove barrel, block-blade front and sliding-leaf rear sights; receiver is marked "Spencer Repeating/Rifle Co. Boston, Mass./Pat'd. March 6, 1860" at top, has serpentine trigger guard-operating lever that rolls the breechblock back and down for auto loading and extraction, right-side back-action lock and sidehammer, left-side sling bar and ring; oil-finished walnut forend has spring-retained band, matching buttstock has carbine buttplate with swivel door opening to 7-shot internal magazine tube, sling loop at belly. Mfg'd ca. 1863-65. Condition is very good retaining no original finishes, the barrel being smooth mottled gunmetal gray-brown, the receiver with scattered cleaned light erosion, especially left side, the balance smooth gunmetal. Stocks are sound showing the nicks and minor losses attendant to military use, a secure 2" crack at right receiver, added color and finish. Action operates well, bore shows overall light-to-moderate erosion and very good rifling. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. (Antique)
