Civil War Smith Breechloading Percussion Saddle-Ring Carbine, #15213, .50 cal., 21.625" round-to-octagonal barrel has carbine open sights and a large spring-steel catch at barrel/breech juncture that allows it to tip down for loading; receiver marked at left "Manufactured by/ Mass. Arms Co./Chicopee Falls" and "Poultney & Trimble/Baltimore U.S.A.", has left-side sling ring and bar, right-side hammer/nipple bolster, barrel release button ahead of trigger; oil-finished walnut forend is retained by a single band with sling loop, matching buttstock with carbine buttplate. Mfg'd ca. 1861-65. Condition is very good retaining approx. 35% thinning and darkening military-style dull blue, case colors have darkened, metal surfaces have been given a coat of varnish. Stocks are sound and very smooth, likely having been sanded and re-stained/oiled. Barrel hinge is tight. Action is weak, bore shows overall moderate erosion and good rifling. Est.: $1,500-$2,000.
