Civil War Sharps New Model 3-Band Straight-Breech Musket, Altered to Metallic Cartridge in the Post-War Era, #C,52536, .50-70 CF cal., 30" tapered round barrel has block-blade front and folding-leaf rear sights, marked "F/55" with other markings at breech illegible; receiver has serpentine lever that drops breech open for loading/auto extraction (and acts as a trigger guard), right side-hammer, marked "C. Sharps' Patent/Sept. 12th, 1848" at right and "C,52536" on upper tang, other markings obscured; 2-pc. 3/4 stock of oil-finished walnut has sling loop at belly, crescent buttplate, three spring-retained bands (middle with sling loop), nosecap. Mfg'd ca. 1860s, altered 1867 to .50-70 centerfire at the Sharps factory, by removing the pellet-primer mechanism and replacing the buttstock with one lacking a patchbox. Condition is about very good showing age and military use: the metal surfaces are gunmetal gray with overall cleaned light-to-moderate erosion (heavy on buttplate tang) and mostly obscured markings. Stocks show moderate dings/losses, no inspectors' marks, but are sound with nice color. Action is crisp, bore is heavily corroded. Est.: $1,200-$1,800. (Antique)
