Circa 1865 A. Dougherty, Army and Navy Civil War playing cards, 'The Monitor and the Merrimac'. One of the rarest American decks complete with 52 cards. Ace of Monitor and ace of Merrimac, both with maker's name 'A. Dougherty Manufacturer, 26 Beekman St. N.Y'. Ace of Monitor reads 'To Commemorate The Greatest Event in Naval History, the Substitution of Iron For Wood'. The four suits are Monitors, Merrimacs, Soaves and Drummers. Provenance: Gretna, Louisiana estate.
