Canadian Marconi Company Type RUQ fixed-tuned VHF receiver, serial number 356, manufactured for the Department of Transport Radio Division. This rack-mount communications unit has a heavy metal cabinet with dual front handles and an exposed vacuum-tube chassis containing shielded sections, transformers, cylindrical components and a multipin connector. The front panel provides RF and AF gain controls, local/remote RF gain selection, headphone and carrier connections, dimmer and muting controls, power switch and fuse holder. The RUQ was a single-channel, crystal-controlled, double-conversion superheterodyne receiver intended for aeronautical ground-station reception of AM radiotelephone signals across 118-136 MHz. The design incorporated automatic noise limiting, automatic volume control and carrier-operated squelch circuitry. Multiple tube sockets are vacant. The RUQ design was documented in January 1950 during the postwar expansion of VHF air-to-ground communications and airport traffic-control systems.
