Csa Identified Springfield Percussion Rifle Used At Gettysburg in Pickett's Charge. The rifle was used by a CSA soldier whose name is carved on the stock: "J.D. McAdams, CO I, 26 NCI." McAdams was at Gettysburg and fought in battles on July 1 and 2, then took part in Pickett's Charge on July 3, 1863. His rifle barrel has a deep gash as the result of a Union sword striking it. Gettysburg identified CSA weapons are very rare and even more so one from Pickett's Charge. McAdams' regiment, the 26th North Carolina, had the highest casualty rate of any unit at Gettysburg.

Pickett's Charge was an infantry assault ordered by Gen. Robert E. Lee against Maj. Gen. George G. Meade's Union positions on Cemetery Ridge on July 3, 1863. Maj. Gen. George Pickett was actually one of three generals who commanded the charge-- the other two were Brig. Gen. J. Johnston Pettigrew, and Maj. Gen. Isaac R. Trimble--consisting of troops from Lt. Gen. James Longstreet's First Corps and Lt. Gen. A.P. Hill's Third Corps. Some 12,500 CSA soldiers had to march across a three-quarter mile open stretch of land broken by fences which had to be climbed over or torn down; half of them died in the attempt. Union losses were about 1,500. Gettysburg is acknowledged by many to be the turning point of the war. Ex Claude Harkins Collection.
