CUTHBERT H. SLOCOMB OF THE WASHINGTON ARTILLERY. A fine pair of Civil War period Confederate officer’s gauntlets worn by Captain C.H. Slocombum while serving with the Washington Artillery of New Orleans, Louisiana. The gloves appear to be gray in color but may have originally been white when worn by Slocombum. The cuffs have 6” wide openings and appear to be lined with goat skin. There are 2 rows of decorative stitching at the lower and upper end of the cuff. The back of the gloves have 3 stitched lines extending from the upper decorative stitched row to the base of the fingers. Penned in period ink on the inside of the cuffs is the name “MAYNARD” and “1864”. This name was originally thought to identify the grouping. It was later realized that Captain C. H. Slocombum had written his name on the back of the hang strap of one of the uniforms, thus finally identifying this incredibly historic uniform group. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Les Jensen authentication letter. CONDITION: the gauntlets remain exceptionally solid with minor insect damage primarily around the base of the right cuff. A few small sections of stitching are missing from the back of the right gauntlet. Expectedly, the gauntlets are a bit dirty and appear gray in color. PROVENANCE: Abraham Lincoln Book Shop, Chicago, IL, to legendary collector George Markham in 1957 to the esteemed collection of Don and Judy Polifka in 1987. (02-13431/BF). $2,400-3,600.
