Bag measures 6 3/4" x 5” x 1 3/4”. A rare Civil War period English made Confederate ball bag produced by the firm S. Isaac Campbell & Co. of London. The pouch was worn on a waist belt & supported by a single tapered 3 1/4" leather loop on the reverse that fastened to a brass finial at the base of the bag. The outer flap closes by use of a sewn leather billet that closes over a brass finial. This billet is approx. 2 1/4” long & may have been mfg. at this length or shortened during field use. Unlike some other examples, there is no interior leather loop to secure an oiler but there is a sm. interior pouch possibly for caps or even flints. The box is clearly stamped on the inside of the flap, just below the stitching on the closing tab, “S ISAAC CAMPBELL & CO 71 JERMYN ST LONDON” inside a tombstone shaped border. CONDITION: pouch is quite solid & shows light to moderate wear overall. There is some wear to the stitching at the edges of the box. The closing tab, or billet, seems to have an extra hole. (02-13498-4/BF). $3,500-5,000.
