Knapsack measures approx. 15 1/2" x 13” x 4 1/4". A rare Civil War period English made Confederate knapsack produced by the firm S. Isaac Campbell & Co. of London. It is a wood framed knapsack covered in black painted, white canvas w/ leather reinforced corners & leather straps. Knapsacks like this example were originally issued w/ shoulder straps & a covered mess tin. This example, like nearly all the few known surviving examples, does not retain the straps or mess tin. The knapsack does retain all interior & exterior closing straps however the left closing buckle is missing. Both brass hooks remain on the base. The interior of the closing flap is stenciled, “S ISAAC CAMPBELL & CO. LONDON”. CONDITION: the black painted canvas remains quite supple. Leather portions are dry & a bit scuffed. Flap is complete. Back of knapsack has a couple of sm. punctures. Stencil is a bit difficult to read because of staining & bleed through from the painted canvas, however the markings remain easily discernible. (02-13498-1/BF). $4,500-6,000.
