Typical early war "Stars & Bars" 1861. Measuring 69" long by 40" wide, two red bars & one white bar w/ blue canton & seven stars in circle in canton. Hoist consists of folded over blue bunting 1 3/4". Constructed of wool bunting, hand & machine stitched. Stitched to cotton backing & mounted in a gray wooden frame w/ plexiglass cover. Before his death, George Wray indicated that this flag had a Georgia provenance, perhaps carried to war in 1861 by a Georgia regiment. To date, after a thorough examination of his research files, no hard evidence of this association has been found. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a copy of conservation report is included. CONDITION: flag has not been removed from its frame for thorough examination, but the following features are clearly evident. An approx. 16" by 10" rectangular section of the upper red bar shows considerable fading, along w/ 2 narrow strips on the lower red bar, an indication that the flag was folded & exposed to light in these areas. Creases from this folding are still evident. Flag is missing approximately 10–15% of its fabric, especially in the white bar. Missing sections have been replaced w/ appropriately colored backing cloth. All 7 stars are replaced w/ white silk fabric along w/ other conservation by Becky Sudsbury at the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (“MESDA”) in Winston Salem, NC, 1983. PROVENANCE: Ex George Wray Collection; Atlanta History Center 2005. (02-12966/JS). $10,000-15,000.
