Cal. 56-50. S# 1847. Standard configuration. Bbl. 30". This is a very early example. This possibly could have been 5th Michigan Cavalry used. John Beckendorf, a 5th Michigan Cavalry scholar cites that S# 1853, just 6 #'s away is one of very few identified 5th Michigan Spencers used at Gettysburg. CONDITION: "as found" attic/barn condition w/ especially crisp marking on breech. Metal is overall plum/brown patina w/ pitting. Stock is sound & solid w/ barely discernable cartouche. Wood shows numerous cosmetic blemishes w/ much erosion on forestock. Like so many of Mr. Poppen's guns, this appears to be a Civil War survivor found in Virginia. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Dan Poppen. (01-17320/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
