A good example of a regulation Civil War Officer's Grade Forage Cap (aka bummer's kepi) being a high quality commercial cap w/ a quilted lining in the interior crown. This hat no doubt saw war time use as there is still a faded shield shape on crown for possibly a 23rd Army Corp. badge or something of same shape that was attached. The cap is constructed w/ the standard reeded welt around the crown & above the visor, w/ the added quality of a dbl. stitched seam down the back. The side buttons are Union staffs. The original sweat band & chin strap are intact. All in all, a very presentable war time company grade kepi. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: custom plexiglass case, picture printouts, plexiglass display plaque. CONDITION: overall very good. The blue wool body has moth tracking & there are 3 well repaired separations done from inside the hat utilizing other material. Hat is missing its silk lining w/ only sm. remnants still attached at edges. Patent leather sweat band is fairly sound & solid w/ some cracking & crazing. Brim is very good including sewn edging. Chin strap is original as are the 2 matching side buttons, though one has plain brass back & the other is more often seen tin-back. PROVENANCE: Herbert "Bert" Murch Collection. (02-12868/JS). $2,400-2,700.
