Cal. 54. S# 14203. Bbl. 22 1/8”. Merrill carbines came out early in the Civil War, 1st models w/ patchbox & later 2nd types w/out. Standard configuration w/ 22 1/8" bbl., brass mounted. Unique lever activated breech marked "J.H MERRILL BALTO. / PAT. JULY 1858". Breech has S# "14208". Lock is marked "J.H. MERRILL BALTO. / PAT. JULY 1858 / APL. 9 MAY 21-28-61" below sm. eagle & "1862” on tail w/ matching S#. This carbine shows honest saddle wear w/ good inspector’s cartouche. CONDITION: good to very good overall, complete & original. Metal is overall mottled gray patina. Brass has medium mustard patina. Stock is sound & solid w/ numerous sm. storage blemishes, cartouche is clear under saddle ring bar. Mechanically fine w/ pitted rifling in bore. (01-17664/JS). ANTIQUE. $800-1,200.
