Antique British Short Land Pattern ''Brown Bess'' Type Flintlock Infantry Musket, NVSN, .75 smoothbore cal., 42'' pinned barrel is marked with what appear to be Birmingham ''crossed swords'' proofmarks at breech and fitted with an integral bayonet lug at muzzle but no sights; rounded lockplate with pointed tail has a double-line border and is marked with a flower-like motif ahead of flint cock and what appear to be two bees behind; brass furniture including ''winged'' sideplate, heavy triggerguard with fancy upper and lower finials and mounting point for a sling swivel, heavy buttplate with long top tang, nose cap, and three fancy ramrod ferrules; iron trigger with early-style curled tail, and button-tip ramrod; one-piece European walnut fullstock with nicely carved comb. Condition is very good, the barrel with black powder pitting in area of touchhole, the iron parts otherwise having a gunmetal gray patina with clear markings, the brass showing a cleaned patina. This musket appears to be in original flintlock configuration, with unbushed touchhole and original lock parts. Stock is smooth and sound showing minor marks of age and use and perhaps a thin later coat of varnish. Action is tight and functions properly; smoothbore is clean. The Brown Bess fought Napoleon Bonaparte's forces in numerous iconic battles, as well as American troops and their Indian allies during the War of 1812. Est.: $1,750-$2,750. (Antique)
