Historical Context

The Black Eyed Peas — comprising will.i.am, apl.de.ap, Taboo, and Fergie — were among the most commercially dominant acts in the world during the 2009-2011 period, driven by The E.N.D. (2009) and The Beginning (2010). Their touring and broadcast appearances during this era included the 2011 Super Bowl XLV Halftime Show, the 2010 FIFA World Cup Opening Ceremony, Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve (December 31, 2009), the 2010 American Music Awards, the 2009 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, and numerous major international festival and arena performances. The E.N.D. World Tour ran from 2009 through 2011 and was one of the most technically elaborate production tours of its era.

The Roland AX-Synth keytar was central to the band's visual and musical identity during The E.N.D. World Tour — a shoulder keyboard that allowed performers to deliver keyboard parts dynamically from the front of the stage, reinforcing the band's high-energy, technology-forward live aesthetic.

According to George Pajon Jr. in his statement accompanying the Techno Empire listing: "This Keytar was used by both Will & Printz Board (musical director) every night onstage. It was used during the whole 'The End' Tour."

The Roland AX-Synth is a 49-key shoulder keyboard featuring an onboard synthesizer engine, D-Beam controller, ribbon controller, and an expressive performance architecture designed specifically for frontline stage use.

Stage & Performance Use

This keytar was played by will.i.am and Printz Board throughout The E.N.D. World Tour, one of the most technically elaborate and commercially successful touring productions of its era. The unit retains multiple features that document its active stage life, including a custom production modification to the ON button and the original performance strap with integrated wireless MIDI transmitter.

Production Modifications

A plastic ring has been glued around the ON/OFF button on the control panel — a deliberate production modification to prevent accidental instrument shutdown during live performance. The ring is hollow at the center, allowing intentional operation of the switch while shielding it from inadvertent contact. This type of field modification is characteristic of high-stakes professional touring production where equipment failure mid-performance carries significant consequences. The modification remains intact and is a direct physical record of the instrument's active touring life.
