***Auction Highlight*** 1884-s Morgan Dollar $1 Graded Select Unc By USCG. Unlike other dates in the Morgan dollar series, apparently no great quantities of the 1884-S date went into storage or were transferred to the Treasury. It appears most of the mintage of 3.2 million pieces was placed into circulation shortly after production. Rumors of unreleased bags and rolls of Uncirculated 1884-S dollars continue to float around the collecting community to this day, but none have surfaced in the past 50 years and most likely the "secret" hoards do not exist. As a result, all 1884-S silver dollars are rare in Mint State. Attractive 1884-S dollars or well-struck examples such as the coin offered here are highly valued, since many Mint State examples of the date are weakly defined in the centers -- a surprising trait that is uncharacteristic of most San Francisco mint coins. This brilliant example has well-defined hair details above Liberty's ear and strong breast feather detail on the eagle. The surfaces display frosted fields and nice, satiny luster. Abrasions from transport in cloth bags are commensurate with the grade and only the one under the eye are worthy of individual mention. This is a high-quality, brilliant-white specimen, destined for a superior Morgan dollar collection. A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win Coin
