Antique Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine, Late 2nd Model, #62824, .44-40 CF cal., 20'' barrel with block-blade front and single-leaf rear sights marked with the Winchester name, address and King's Improvement patent dates in two lines; full-length magazine tube; steel receiver with sliding ejection port dustcover and left-side saddle ring, marked ''Model 1873'' on top tang and serial number on lower tang; steel operating lever (with old rawhide wrapping), two barrel bands and carbine buttplate with sliding cover opening to butt trap for jointed cleaning rod (not present); oil-stained walnut forend and buttstock. Mfg'd ca. 1879-80. Condition is very good. Metal is a smooth dark bluish-brown (having traces of blue in protected areas); markings are legible (caliber markings lacking on barrel and cartridge lifter). Stocks are solid (1'' gouge on left side of forearm; 5'' scrape on left side of buttstock). Action is smooth; bore is clean with deep rifling. A desirable early '73 carbine. Est.: $1,200-$1,800.
