Antique U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Breechloading Single Shot Infantry Rifle, #419328, .45-70 CF cal., 32.625" round barrel, block-blade front (doubles as bayonet lug) and adjustable long-range Buffington rear sights, marked "V/P/(eagle head)/1" (?) and "A" at breech; receiver has trapdoor breechblock marked "US/Model/1884" at hinge; flat lockplate is marked "(spread-wing eagle)" left of "U.S./Springfield" below latch; steel fittings include 2-pc. trigger guard with sling loop at front, curved buttplate marked "US" at top screw, two spring-retained bands (top with stacking swivel), nosecap, slotted button-tip ramrod. Fullstock of oil-stained walnut is marked with the clipped-corner "SWP/1886" cartouche of inspector Samuel W. Porter, encircled "P" proof, "E", large and small "D" at belly, with step at lower band. Mfg'd 1886. Condition is good retaining approx. 10% thinning original blue, dark-bluish lockplate, otherwise smooth blue-brown metal. Stock is sound showing generally light age and use marks (heavier at left opposite lock, belly near buttplate), original finish, and sharp markings. Action is strong and smooth, bore shows light frosting at muzzle and sharp rifling. Est.: $400-$600. (Antique)
