Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi, Signed and Dated, w/Koshirae. Nice shinogi-zukuri shaped wakizashi with muji hada grain, and a narrow nioi deki, ko-gunome hamon. Signed tachi-mei "Toyonaga Toko Sa Yukihide", and dated Meiji 3(1870). It has a chu-kissaki with o-maru boshi and short turn back. The habaki is brass. Blade is in a nice state of older polish with speckling of old oil residue, a few light scratches from going in and out of the saya, and a couple of tiny rust stains at the tip. Nakago is ubu, with one mekugi-ana, and has a nice light brown patina appropriate for the age of the sword. It has nice file marks and a well carved signature and date. There are several smiths that signed this way, including some very high ranking ones. But this may be the later Tosa smith working in 1865-70. There is no certificate to verify the signature as genuine, just a fact sheet from a Japanese dealer. The handachi style mounts consist of a mottled red lacquer saya, with gold lacquer that is made to resemble cherry bark. The fittings are dark shakudo with smooth lines surrounding nanako panels and all are in excellent condition. All the fittings match on the saya and tsuka. There is a woven blue sageo cord attached to the kurikata. The saya lacquer has some small scrapes and cracks in a few areas, but they are not too detracting. The tsuba is mokko shaped iron with a stippled surface and raised carvings of a wasp and wasp nest. There are small gold dots on the wings and forming the eyes. There are kozuka and kogai hitsuanas on either side of the nakago ana, and it measures 71mm wide x 75mm tall. The reverse features a tree and branches carved into the iron. The body of the tsuba has nice dark patina, with some surface rust on some areas of the rim. None of the fittings or the tsuba are signed. The seppas are silver foil covered copper. The tsuka is covered with same' ray skin and wrapped with older green silk ito cord. There is a small wood shim glued inside the tang opening of the tsuka to tighten up the fit to the tang. The menuki are large shakudo male and female dragons with gold covered details, and are in nice condition. Overall a very attractive sword. Est.: $2,500-$4,000.
